How to Design a Website Layout
One of the first questions I am asked is about how to design a website layout.
Luckily this is an easy question -- there are generic sizes used by all website designers, template and theme designers, and content mangement system websites.
This quick video gives you a brief overview, but remember, don't start getting stuck on the number of pixels, think of your website's "look and feel" rather than the width of the columns.
If you know the features (plugins, widgets, modules) you'd like to show on your site, they too will help determine the width of the sidebar columns.
Generic Website Layout Dimensions
Top Banner/Logo space width: approximately 900px
Content Column width: approximately 500px
Two Side Columns - Sidebars: approximately 200px each (another example 250px & 200px, Content 450px)
Footer width: 900px
As mentioned, these are the generic website layout sizes - you can specify your requirements to your web designer and they should be able to tweak the Cascading Stylesheets (CSS) to suit your needs.
