Most important tip! The SEO "goal" should NOT be wanting to be #1 in Search Results!

That's right - you read that right, heard me correctly.

If you make THAT your goal, you're going to be climbing an up-hill battle for the entire life of your website and business. The search engines keep changing their algorithms, and no-one has control over that apart from those search engine companies.

You might be #1 for a month, then there's an algorithm change by Google and you might drop back to page 84, which would be quite a shock. In fact, this is what has been happening in the first part of 2011 - it's called the Panda or Farmer Update, and when Google implemented it, giant corporations lost their rankings overnight.

Yes this was shocking, but if you build your website and your credibily the RIGHT way, this shouldn't happen to your site. The "right" way is to provide excellent information for folks who visit your site, lead them to other great content from each page of your site, and have excellent incoming links from all kinds of relevant sites and sources across the internet. THESE are the things the search engines are looking for, they want to know you are offering an EXCELLENT experience to your website visitors, that you honestly want to help them solve whatever's on their mind (their search query), and that you're here for the long haul

"So - how do you do this SEO magic?"

Do I set up a Google Adwords monthly paid advertising plan, or similar with Yahoo or Bing?

No.

Do I use "black hat", dodgy, unscrupulous, frowned-upon ways to climb to the top of search results?

No.

In my No Guarantee Disclaimer (which I provide to all my SEO Clients), there are no absolute guarantees of being at the "top" of the search results pages - what we aim for is turn your site into an "authority" site with fantastic content accessible on the internet.

SEO for your website is a long-term strategy and there may not be any massive changes for up to six months - it takes time and patience.

SEO is an ongoing task, and not something which is just done once.

When the SEO strategies are done consistently, month after month, the quality of the strategies boosts the web pages which are being targetted. I tell folks that 12 months is a good start to boost your website, and that patience is a virtue. I also ask how long the website's been online, and what success has the website had so far in the search engines?

"When will I see RESULTS?"

There are millions of pages on the internet, and the search engines robots need to know you've been working on your site, and then they come as soon as they're able to. They have to check all the data on your pages, how the pages link together, who's linking to your site or talking about your site across the internet, then they follow those links and check those out too ... so it can take months for the changes to appear.

But once the SEO strategies START, and then continue on a regular basis (at least monthly), those hungry little search engine robots will come scurrying back to see what you've been up to, and they will continue to visit often if you KEEP WORKING ON YOUR SEO STRATEGY :-)
