Busy time at the moment!

Lots of new ideas I'm testing as potential offers for my clients, constantly learning from mentors and other wonderful people met online and off, and madly planning for a holiday [more on that at the bottom of the email]!

I've had more than a few enquiries lately about getting more traffic to websites, and whether I had any tips.

Actually, yes - I do.  I know you've probably read my other tips on this same question over the past year or more, but I have one suggestion which is really worth listening to.

And it is????

Write more CONTENT
for your site - it works!

I can hear you groaning from here, but trust me, I've been doing experiments this year with different techniques and the one thing which has increased the traffic tremendously on two of my sample sites is adding more and more content - and submitting sitemaps to Google [more on this later].

The Search Engines love content.

They eat it up.

They keep sending their robots to check up on you because you've been feeding them with at least one new webpage per week [if you can write 2 or 3, even better!!].  When they keep finding more content, they praise you by pushing your listing up higher in their search engine results.

You see, the search engines are looking for websites filled with *useful* information, not people trying to make a quick buck from sites which only have affiliate links on every single page and very little relevant content.

Once you WRITE the content, and you upload a new page or article or book review on your site, you can let the search engines know by using Site Maps [more on this below].

If you don't think your site will benefit from more content, but you're open minded, send me an email in July and we'll discuss it further - it may be there's a source you can tap into to bring more visitors - and therefore potential clients - to your site.

If you haven't come across this before, I suggest you visit the Google Webmaster Tools pages and have a good read - you could start with this link:

This page covers lots of goodies which you might be able to use for your own site to help Google get to know it better.

You will need to create an account [for free] to be able to login and use the tools, but luckily that's a simple thing.

Even if you're not sure yet HOW to do any of the things they recommend, it's an excellent plan to read as much as you can for when you're ready.

*** Submitting a Site Map  ***

Each website is made up of many pages, and quite often you'll see a link to 'Site Map' on websites.  Have you seen that?  It's generally a list of all the pages of the site, grouped together meaningfully.  Google loves sitemaps because they help the Google 'bots' [internet robots] 'crawl' through your website and find all the pages which link together to make it easy for your website visitors. The sitemaps need to be created in a certain way for the search engines, and these aren't the same as the sitemaps which appear on the website itself.

So, what can you do to get started?  Think up some new webpages for your site - they can be listed on one page as links going to other pages on your site.  They could be:

tips on using your product or service - 10 Tips, or 5 or 7 or whatever - everyone loves lists
can you write about one or more of those tips in detail? If yes, make that another page or two :)
book reviews - do you have any books on your desk or near your desk which could be of interest to your clients, and which you have read and you think are great?  You'd be surprised at how many people love to read about books recommended to them by someone they trust [you].  The more book reviews you write, the more content you're creating.
write an article about one [or more] of your own clients who is or has used your product or service, and how much it benefited them - people love human interest stories, and if it's about your site, then they'll get to know more about you, they'll learn to trust you and become potential customers, and you'll be creating content for your site. Three good reasons. The fourth is that they'll learn more about your product or service, showing them how easy it is to use, or about more of the features.
when you write about something which isn't provided on your site, try not to put a link to a different website on your site [unless of course it's an affiliate link].  It's best to try to keep people reading, without giving them links to click on to take them away from your site.

Whether you sell houses, or reading glasses, or clothes or food etc, everyone loves reading and learning interesting facts.  Let the internet be your showcase to talk about a wider range of things on your website - email a newsletter to your clients and tell them about the new pages - give them a reason to visit the site, and don't forget to have a Newsletter sign-up box on your pages. If they come to visit, they might want to learn more about you.

Take some time and think about what you'll add to your site - don't just do it willy-nilly. Patience is a great virtue when you're building a business via the internet, so take your time, and jot your ideas down whenever you think of what you can write.  When you're ready, starting writing a page or two. Trust me, it does work, it's free, and the benefits can be enormous.
