What do I do next with my website?

If you've just got your website online or even if it's been online for a while, you might be wondering what to do NEXT.

I'd like to outline a series of things you COULD do, but you only need to do them in small steps, when you feel you're able to accomplish one thing at a time.

Tracking your website visitors - what questions did they type to find you online?

  1. create a Gmail account to set up an email using your-business-name@gmail.com - so that you can set up other accounts with Google (if you're one of my clients, check with me first as I may have set this up for you already)

  2. create a Google Webmaster account

  3. create a Google Analytics account

  4. create a Google Alert to track your business name, your name, your product names, on a daily basis with automated updates

  5. add yourself to at least one local business directory (contact me if you'd like to know about my service to add your business into several directories)

  6. add yourself to at least one international business directory

  7. set up Twitter and Facebook accounts for your business (speak with me first, and I'll provide tips on the best way to do this)

Tip:  When you know what questions people type to find your site, you can create target pages to answer those questions. This is the easiest keyword research you'll ever do :-)

If you'd like to know more about how to do this, contact me today.

Add regular content to your site

The best way I can explain this is as follows:

Think of your website as a garden.

If you don't feed it or water it (add new content), it will wither and die (fall down to page 3,421 in the search engine results).

If you tend to it at least ONCE A WEEK, it will be happy (the search engine robots will be happy and come by to see what you've been doing).

If you've been tweaking regularly, your website will start to climb the ranks in the search engine results pages, so it will be found by more and more people looking for what you've got.

Now that doesn't sound too hard, does it?  :-)

So I know in advance what your next question will be.

This is one of the most-asked questions I hear, "How can I come up with MORE content after my 5 main pages??".

This is so easy you'll be surprised when I give you my suggestions:

  • write down at least 10 of the most-asked questions you get about your business, product or service

  • turn this list into a web page (you don't even need to do keyword research for these questions)

  • for each question on the list, create a NEW page, and ANSWER the question

  • so if you have a list of 10 questions, you create a 'cover page' showing the list, then create 10 more pages to answer each of the questions - that's 11 new pages you can make very easily. The list will have each question hyperlinked to its answer page.

Let's go one step further ...

  • write down at least 10 of the should-ask questions you want people to know about your business, product or service

  • turn this into a web page

  • for each question on the list, create a NEW page, and ANSWER the question

  • so if you have a list of 10 should-ask questions, you create a 'cover page' showing the list, then create 10 more pages to answer each of the questions - that's 11 new pages to add to the 11 you just created (see above);  you now have 22 NEW PAGES without breaking into a sweat.

    • The list will have each question hyperlinked to its answer page.

Search engines LOVE fresh content - you don't have to make these 22 pages all at once on the same day, you could try to make one new page per day (schedule it in your diary), or if you're really busy, aim for one per week.

If you also set up a way to capture email names when people visit your site (see Mailing List and Autoresponder), you can broadcast a message/newsletter when you add a new page with a question and answer, and ASK the subscribers if THEY have questions they'd like answered.

Let me know if you have any questions about this - I'd love to help.

Mailing List and Autoresponder

Yes you really should have a Mailing List :-)

I know most people panic when I suggest they start a Newsletter, or at least have a sign-up box on their website but think of it this way - if you have a brand new site, and you start to get website visitors but the phone doesn't ring and the email enquiries don't appear, what can you do?

One of THE most important things you need for your business is to have a way to capture people's email address when they visit your site. Offer them a freebie, like a PDF detailing the "Answers to the Top 10 Questions Asked About My Business/Product/Services".

See where I'm heading with this? If you've already created your list of 10 questions above, then the info is already on your website, but these folks might not have found that page yet, so by offering them a freebie PDF to download/receive via email, you're starting a relationship with them right on your site.

I can recommend the best and easiest way to set this up, so let's chat.

Autoresponder Series of informational emails

You can also use your Newsletter/ezine as a way to drip-feed this very same information (or other great relevant info) by using the mailing list software's Autoresponder feature. It works like this:

  • you create a list of tips about your product or service

  • expand that into one or two paragraphs about each tip

  • each tip becomes one part of your Autoresponder "series"

  • decide how frequently to send these tips out automatically - one per day, one every 3 days, one per week etc

  • when someone signs up to your list on your website, they will automatically receive fresh info from you according to the schedule you've set up.

This is an extremely powerful marketing tool - it keeps your name and business name fresh in the minds of your subscriber. The added bonus is that if someone signs up on January 1st, they receive the whole series of emails. If someone signs up on April 17th, their emails start at email number 1, and then go through the whole series. This saves you time and money, and this works while you sleep.

Let's take that one step further ...

Do you have another topic or something related which you can write ANOTHER SERIES OF TIPS about? I bet you do :-)

You can easily create ANOTHER Autoresponder Series, add it to your website, and you can even email this new Topic to your current subscribers and let them know where to sign up for Series 2 if it interests them :-)

So you'll end up with two groups of people subscribed to two different lists - but each list of subscribers is targeted to EXACTLY the people who want to know about that particular product or service. Can you start to see how powerful this is?

Once you have these mailing lists, you can also send Broadcasts at different times to give a current update on your business, or anything new you'd like to share. Let your personality shine in all of these correspondences and you'll have people following you who enjoy what you have to say.

Along the way some of these subscribers may turn into clients, because they've come to know you and like you, and feel they can trust you.

If this sounds like something you'd like to do, let me know and I'll help get you started.

Use audio and video on your site

Add a video introduction to your site - if you're camera-shy, it can be a Powerpoint or Openoffice slideshow with your voice-over.

Do you have information you can share about your business, product or service which could be saved as a voice recording (podcast) and be available on your website for folks to download and listen to on their iPods?

This is another great way for folks to get to know you - and trust you - and is easy for you to do.

Creating a great Youtube Channel

If you're going to share videos, you'll need a fabulous Youtube Channel tweaked with all the search engine optimisation to ensure people come check out your website.

If you're ready for Youtube, give me a call and we can work out the best strategies to make sure your Youtube Channel is doing overtime to send people to your site.

Share the love - tell the world about your new website information

Whenever you add information to your site, you can spread the word by sharing the page's link on other sites.

There are many social bookmarking sites where you can post this information, and I've tried many of them over the past few years.

I now have a couple of systems I use to share my information quickly and easily - my link/url gets listed on many sites across the internet, which boosts the ranking of that particular web page. This in turns gets those search engine robots scurrying all over the place, following links back to my site, and rewarding me by pushing my web page up a couple of notches in search engine results pages.

Yes, these steps do take some time, but the benefits outweigh the effort. If you'd like your website to succeed, there are definitely ways to help boost it.

Let me know if you'd like to now more about boosting your website pages across the internet.

Social Media / Facebook / Twitter / LinkedIn etc

Have you jumped on the bandwagon for social media yet?

If not, you're missing an amazing opportunity to CONNECT with people who might be looking for your product or service, or current clients who might want to talk about your products and services. This is the new millenium way of doing business, and you need to know what's being said about you and your business online. Make sure you're available by hanging out where everyone can find you :-)

Rest assured this doesn't mean checking your accounts every 5 minutes - but it does mean having strategies in place to ensure you keep in touch with followers. When you're ready to jump in, let me know and we'll work out together what you need to get started.
