13 Top Tips for Keyword Meta Tags on your Website

I’d love to know if you’ve already tried any of these techniques, would you like to leave a Comment below? Thanks so much in advance 🙂

How do I work out which keywords to use for my website?

Are you wondering what the heck this even means?

Build your own website. Learn to understand SEO in bite-sized piecesDo you keep hearing you just pick the right keywords, and then your website will magically transform into a client-getting and traffic-getting machine for you?

But — if you don’t know WHICH keywords to use, how can you even get started?

If you’ve been asking yourself some of these questions, and feeling lost – don’t worry – you’re not alone.

Over the past five to ten years there have been tried and true ways to research keywords using software, or online services, and it was big business.

But here we are in 2013 (yes this article has been updated) and I’d like to tell you the easiest ways to work out what the keywords are for your business and website.

  • Forget the keyword and SEO software
  • Forget the online services
  • Forget that many people tell you this is complicated
  • Yes, some of the old techniques definitely still work extremely well, but this is the simplest way for YOU to get started.

The secret is …

Questions.

That’s right — the keywords for YOUR business and website are simply the QUESTIONS people ask about your business.

Whether you’re a dog walker, or a beautician, an artist or real estate agent, an author or a management consultant, etc etc — make a LIST of questions people ask you.

That’s it — it’s that simple.

When you have a list of QUESTIONS, all you need to do is create one web page or blog post for each question, then ANSWER the question on that page or post.

The MORE questions and answers you provide, the easier it will be for people to find your website in search engine results.

“So Teena, HOW do I work out which keywords to use? Write QUESTIONS? It’s THAT easy?”

Yes!

If you create 10 questions and answers, that’s 10 new pages or posts.

What if you did 25, or 50 or even 100 questions and answers? If you answer a ton of questions which potential clients or customers ask you, and other potential clients and customers type ANY of those questions into any search engine, you’ll be FOUND in the search engine results pages (known as the SERPs).

So set yourself a goal today:

  • start writing your list of questions
  • use every question you’ve heard in person, via email, or over the phone etc etc
  • start by creating one new page/post per week
  • if you can do more, that’s FANTASTIC! do that!

The bottom line is, never stop answering questions on your website.

Each QUESTION you type becomes the “long tail keyword phrase” which people will type into a search engine.

If you’ve ANSWERED the question, and provided more Q&A’s, they’ll stay on your site and keep reading. Fantastic!

Post about them online in social media (twitter, facebook, Linkedin, etc) and on other places online where YOUR potential clients might hang out — become the “go to” person in your niche or industry, the one which ANSWERS all the questions people could possibly dream up about YOUR expertise, and slowly but surely you will start to get website traffic and visitors.

Now what you DO with that website traffic is up to you – you’ll need to work out a way to turn those visitors into clients, but that’s a whole other topic I’ll cover another day 🙂

Best of luck, keep me posted — I’d love to hear how you get on!

1 – Create a Backlink with Posterous

Please note – this CREATE A BACKLINK WITH POSTEROUS information is no longer valid, as Posterous has been decommissioned (as at June 2013).

Image - Create a Backlink with PosterousLet’s create a link right now using Posterous.com – the one thing you must have is an email name which uses your own domain name.

If I backlink with Posterous, What does this do?

Posterous is a very clever marketing tool/website assistant. By sending an email to Posterous, it gets busy, creates a mini webpage for you, and sends you back an email with your new login details.

You have now created your very first backlink back to your website!

You will now receive a Thank You email from Posterous, with a link to the new page you’ve just created. You will see that your new ‘mini website’ on Posterous has your domain name, for example:

Click the link in the email from Posterous, and follow the steps to sign up.

You have ONE MORE THING to do to finish the BACKLINK.

Login to your Posterous page:

  1. locate the link in the text editor
  2. what you’re going to do is add your KEYWORD PHRASE to the page, then hyperlink those words with the actual link back to the specific web page.
  3. This is the true power of backlinks – using KEYWORDS on the page, but link them to a website page ABOUT that keyword phrase
  4. tip: if you can do this in your email program BEFORE sending it to Posterous, then do so; I include it here as a separate step for those who don’t have this functionality in their email program
  5. Save your Posterous page, and pat yourself on the back 🙂

Yes, you can :

  • click the link to view your new Posterous page
  • login and make changes, and create more pages pointing back to OTHER pages on your website
  • email Posterous without having to login each time
  • send video and many other links in your email, etc etc.

Are you beginning to see how clever – and easy – this is?

But wait – there’s MORE! You can login to your new Posterous account and set it up so that OTHER sites will be notified of your new post, for example Twitter, Facebook, Youtube – look for:

Select Manage and then Autopost to set up the accounts you wish to post to.

How cool is this?!

If you choose Twitter and Facebook, then each time you send a message to Posterous, you’ve actually created THREE backlinks to one page on your website! Excellent! Here is the list of current places Posterous will post your content to:

Image: How to use Posterous to create multiple backlinks for your website

Your Homework:

Try to create one new Posterous page/link back each week (one per day would be super, but it’s hard to keep up the momentum). Those little search bots will be keeping busy and recording all your new activity, which they LOVE!

Next lesson will be posted shortly – stay tuned! >>

Answers to “Do I REALLY need a website?”

Here are my answers to “Do I REALLY need a website?” – you can either watch the video or scroll down to read my answers.

So you have a bunch of questions and you’re not sure where to go from here. Let me answer each of these questions (and more) and see if I can help you quickly understand how fabulous it is to have a website for your business, hobby or passion.

Do I really need a website?

Do I REALLY need a website?

Before i answer this, maybe I should ask you some other questions.

Do you have something you’re trying to sell – a product, or a service? Or do you have information you’d love to share with as many people as you possibly can?

If your answer is “Yes!”, then you really do need a website or blog 🙂 You can reach a global audience of willing shoppers and followers if you have a website, rather than sitting at home hoping someone will hear about you by word of mouth.

How many pages will my website need

How many PAGES will my website need?

This will depend on how much information you’d like to share with your website visitors – to start with you should have:

  • home page
  • contact page with a form
  • about me page
  • info about your product or service

Apart from these standard pages, you will need to add pages on a regular basis to keep your website visitors interested in what you have to say and show them.

Do I really need a newsletter?

Do I really need a NEWSLETTER?

This would have to be the one thing many new website owners tell me they (a) don’t have time for or (b) don’t want to do.

Let me ask you this question – if you were ready to publish a book, launch your new jewellery, sell your fabulous products or services online … would you like a willing crowd of people to tell? A crowd of folks who’ve been following you and feel like they’re getting to know you, so much so that when you email them about your new whatever-it-is, some of them will buy it straight away? If you answered “Yes!” to this question, then YES YOU NEED A NEWSLETTER 🙂 It just doesn’t have to be as complicated or time-consuming as you might imagine – honest.

Do I really have to update my website often?

I have to UPDATE my website – OFTEN?!

If you like shopping for anything – let’s say it’s shoes, or even cars – how would you feel if you went back to the shoe shop or the car dealership week after week and nothing changed? I’m thinking you might get bored with that 🙂

If you update your website often (at LEAST once a week) then some of your site visitors might come back again to see what’s changed and what you’ve been up to. Makes sense?

How will people find my website?

How will people FIND my website?

There are sooo many answers to this question, but I’ll make it short so as not to overwhelm you with tons of great information. If you use website techniques (called SEO – “search engine optimization”), AND you write great interesting content on your webpages, AND you update your website regularly, AND if you write a Newsletter … people will find your website on the internet. You have to be willing to work hard and do all the right things on an ongoing basis to make sure your website is loved by the search engines and the website visitors – and yes, I can teach you all of these techniques 🙂

How will will I know if people visited my website?

How will I know if anyone VISITED my website?

When you set up or build a website, there are many little steps along the way to make sure people will find you. To find out HOW they found you, all you have to do is make sure your website visitors are being ‘tracked’ when they land on your site, and as they pop through your pages. This is called Website Statistics, and it can also track which words the visitors typed into a search engine to FIND you. Isn’t that clever? If you learn to read your ‘web stats’ on a regular basis, they can help you with your business.

What are SERPS?

What are SERPs?

What are SERPS? (Search Engine Results Pages)

I am often asked this question, as it is yet another acronym for us to learn amongst all the techie mumbo-jumbo that’s out there.

This one is worth knowing – it stands for:

S — SEARCH

E — ENGINE

R — RESULTS

P — PAGES

S — simply adds a plural to the word ‘page”.

So if you are searching for something on a search engine like Google or Bing etc, and you end up with pages of results, they are known as SERPS.

How to use it in a sentence?

  • “I was searching for ‘red donkey shoes’ the other day and found 1,222,00 results in the SERPS.”
